You give yourself permission to grieve by recognizing the need for grieving. Grieving is the natural way of working through the loss of a love. Grieving is not weakness nor absence of faith. Grieving is as natural as crying when you are hurt, sleeping when you are tired or sneezing when your nose itches. It is nature's way of healing a broken heart.
- Doug Manning

A child can live with anything as long as he or she is told the truth and is allowed to share with loved ones the natural feelings people have when they are suffering.
- Eda LeShan
As a parent, it's my responsibility to equip my child to do this - to grieve when grief is necessary and to realize that life is still profoundly beautiful and worth living despite the fact that we inevitably lose one another and that life ends . . .
- Sam Harris
Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical, and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.
- Earl Grollman

When your child has a broken heart . . .
Help your hurting child through grief to healing

If you are here, chances are a child you love is grieving—and possibly so are you.
  • Do you feel helpless, not knowing how you can help to heal the pain?
  • Are you heartbroken that the life you imagined for your child has been shattered?
  • Does the loss feel overwhelming in ways that no one around you can understand?
  • Are you looking for help—for hope—on this parenting detour that you feel utterly unprepared for?

My heart goes out to you. I've been where you are. And I'm glad you're here.

When your child loses something or someone precious, you want desperately to take away the pain. You want your grieving child to be happy and carefree again, but
you don't know if that's possible.  When Children Grieve, it is heartbreaking.

When a child experiences life-changing loss, childhood innocence is shattered. Your child’s life is forever altered. You find yourself in uncharted territory, and no one is able to tell you how to be the parent your child needs. Essential Messages will guide you as you nurture your child's tender heart along the unavoidable journey of grief.

If the loved one your child is grieving is a brother or sister, the loss feel may feel unbearable.
A part of your child's very identity is gone, and you need to figure out how to parent a sibling without a sibling. Your living child and deceased child will always be Siblings By Heart.

It can be painful and difficult for a parent to navigate a childhood that is not what you want for your child—especially when you are suffering with your own grief. Your child's future lies before you, and grief looms larger than life. The Grief Recovery Method®  will lead you through a process of healthy grieving that heals the pain of loss.

"Grief is in two parts," Anne Riophe wrote in her book Epilogue. The first part is loss; the second part is the remaking of life. The services I offer provide what you need to give your child the gifts of good grief and the life skills to remake a life beyond loss that is joy-filled and blessed.

Please hear me. Your child—and you--will feel better. I am here to help.

Here's how I can help

I help parents overcome heartache and challenges that keep them, their children and loved ones stuck in grief and pain. See a brief overview of each of my programs below. Find more information about my programs here, or contact me by filling out the contact form.

When Children Grieve, it is heartbreaking.

There are things you can do to help  WHEN CHILDREN GRIEVE. With your help  your child can grieve the loss and move beyond it to once again enjoy hope-filled days of childhood. Learn how you can HELP CHILDREN DEAL WITH LOSS® in a 6-week program using the Grief Recovery Institute's book, WHEN CHILDREN GRIEVE.

Essential Messages nurture the grieving child's heart.

Unhelpful beliefs about loss and grief are often perpetuated by well-meaning adults who want to help children deal with loss. Recognizing these beliefs as myths is not enough. Replacing the myths with ESSENTIAL MESSAGES nurtures the child's tender heart and teaches good grief life skills for keeping hope alive in spite of loss.  ESSENTIAL MESSAGES can be presented as a work-shop or a multi-week program and can be tailored to meet the needs of an individual or group.

Siblings by Heart thrive with heart-led parenting.

As the bereaved parent of a child who is grieving a sibling, your heart is twice broken, and your grief is excruciating. Comforting and parenting your child in the face of this unspeakable new reality can seem an overwhelming challenge. How can you stop the hurting? And how do you parent the child left to grow up without her beloved sibling? Learn heart-led ways to honor and nurture the unique relationship of SIBLINGS BY HEART through one-to-one coaching or presented as a workshop or a multi-week program tailored to meet the needs of a group.

The Grief Recovery Method® heals the pain of loss.

Contrary to popular belief, time will not heal your pain. Keeping busy and focusing on your child's needs will not make your grief go away. Yet it is possible to feel better and enjoy life again. The positive action steps of THE GRIEF RECOVERY METHOD®  will move you past the pain of loss to begin to experience joy and live life fully again. I offer THE GRIEF RECOVERY METHOD® as a 6-week individual program or an 8-week group program.
Loss and heartache do not define you.
They are part of your journey.

Parenting a Bereaved Sibling
When your child dies, it's difficult enough to bear your own grief, but it's even more heartbreaking to watch your living child grieve for her sibling. How can you stop the hurting? And how do you parent the child left to grow up without her beloved sibling? For the bereaved parent whose heart is twice broken, comforting and parenting your child in the face of this unspeakable new reality can seem an overwhelming challenge. Working with Michele, parents learn tools and essential messages to help you and your child move past the pain and have hope that you can  experience joy beyond the loss.

When Children Grieve®
Our first experiences of loss
happen when we are children—whether a pet dies, a beloved toy is lost, a friend moves away, parents divorce, or a loved one dies or becomes critically ill. Children grieve these experiences, and what they learn about grief shapes how they will cope with later losses. Michele offers the 6-week Helping Children Deal with Loss® program, as well as customized group and individual programs, to teach parents and other caring adults how to help children grieve in healthy and helpful ways. The goal is not for children simply to survive grief, but for them to thrive with it.
The Grief Recovery Method®
Grief is a normal and natural response to loss, yet many of us are overcome and stricken by it, not knowing how to recover from the pain. Contrary to what we may believe, busy-ness and time do not heal grief. It will not fade away on its own; nor is it something to be simply gotten over. But we can recover from grief by taking intentional action steps. Through the Grief Recovery Method®, either in a group setting or one-on-one, I help those who are ready to move beyond grief through some simple action steps to recovery.

Michele Benyo

When a dream is stolen, the heart keeps an ember that cannot be extinguished. That ember can be stirred to flame, rekindling joy and realizing new possibilities.
You turned my mourning to dancing
and my sorrow to joy . . .
